Hong Kong Young Leaders Volunteer Day 2017

Global non-profit housing organisation Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong held a ‘Young Leaders Volunteer Day’ event on 2 December to commemorate International Volunteer Day (5th December). In partnership with Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service – Oi Man Neighbourhood Elderly Centre, 97 youth volunteers cleaned in the homes of 28 elderly families in Oi Man Estate in Ho Man Tin. The event kick started Habitat for Humanity’s ‘Young Leaders Build’ campaign, harnessing young people to work alongside low-income families to improve living conditions across the Asia-Pacific region.

Around 60 students from St. Paul’s College, Heung To Middle School, Jockey Club Ti-I College, Shatin Pui Ying College, South Island School, Pui Ching Middle School, together with more than 30 other volunteers, including actress Kate Yeung, joined together to clean the homes of 28 individual families in Oi Man Estate. “The volunteers worked hard cleaning kitchens, living rooms and toilets to ensure a clean living environment. They were also excited to interact with the senior citizens and spend their Saturday in such a meaningful way. A big thank you to all the volunteers that improved homes, delivering living spaces to enhance health and mental wellness,” said Heron Holloway, Chief Executive, Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong.

“Our volunteering activities are often not easy and can be physically challenging, but they provide a fantastic opportunity for young people to make a difference in their community. With around 1 million young people in Hong Kong, they can be a huge force for change,” continued Heron Holloway.

To achieve Habitat for Humanity’s vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live, Habitat runs the ‘Young Leaders Build’ campaign that involves young people building and improving homes in local neighbourhoods and communities across the world. Two home building events will take place in Myanmar (March 12-18, 2018) and China (Guangzhou, April 20-22 ,2018) to build homes for low income families.
