Siem Reap is widely renowned as the gateway to Angkor Wat, however, with a population of 980,000, 30% of households are still living in poverty. The province is also vulnerable to extreme climate events. In 2016, Siem Reap was gripped by drought in March and May, and dragged by flooding in August and October, thousands of houses were damaged or destroyed. Habitat for Humanity has been launching projects in Siem Reap since 2007, we are now recruiting 30 higher education or university students to join us and build brick houses for families in need of stable housing. The prospective homeowners would include orphan, disability, elderly and people living with HIV/AIDS.
Cambodia is ranked the 13th most vulnerable countries to climate change , and listed as the Vulnerable Twenty Group (V20). Heavy rainfall, widespread flooding and storm brought severe impact on both economic and social aspects, millions of people are still recovering from the damage of previous years’ extreme weather events. The population in Cambodia is already over 15.9 million, however at least 10 million Cambodians are lack of decent housing. 140,000 residents in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, are still living in slums communities that do not have access to clean water, stable shelters and sanitation facilities.
We have been working in Siem Reap province since 2007. We take a holistic approach to improve the housing environment that includes building houses, providing shelter kit for disaster response, developing access to clean water and electricity. Environmentally-friendly solid blocks, solar-powered lights are features of the Habitat house and we have also provided microloans and construction assistance to help the families to become self-reliant. In the past 10 years, we have partnered with 20,000 families to have a stable start in a safe and secure home.
