Hong Kong SAR government grants HK$2.55 million to Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong to support families affected by severe flooding in Vietnam

Hong Kong, 10 January 2017 – Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong has received a HK$2.55 million grant from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government’s Disaster Relief Fund to support families affected by flooding in Vietnam.

“Unrelenting rain led to severe flooding in Vietnam in October 2016, affecting hundreds of thousands of people, with floodwater contaminating water sources used for drinking, cooking and bathing. This grant will enable us to distribute water and sanitation kits to families most impacted by the disaster, ensuring people stay healthy with clean water in their homes,” said Heron Holloway, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong.

Vietnam’s People’s Aid Coordinating Committee issued an international call for disaster relief support in October. The flooding impacted more 130,000 houses, affecting more than half a million people, according to Vietnam’s Disaster Management Centre. Since then, flooding has continued and conditions worsened.

Habitat for Humanity will use the Hong Kong SAR government grant to support 14,000 affected families in Ha Tinh and Quang Binh province with water and sanitation kits. Each family will receive one kit, containing a plastic bucket, tablets used to decontaminate polluted water and a water filter. Each kit is designed to provide a family with clean water for two to three months, depending on the size of the family, to support them while recovering from the disaster.

“Habitat will distribute kits to the most vulnerable families and we will submit an evaluation report and an audited account to the Hong Kong SAR government once the programme has been completed, detailing how the grant was spent,” added Heron Holloway.

This is the sixth grant to be allocated from the Hong Kong SAR government’s Disaster Relief Fund to Habitat Hong Kong. Previously grants were made to support Habitat programmes following the Sichuan earthquake in 2013, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013, the Nepal earthquake in 2015, and two cyclones affecting Fiji and Bangladesh in 2016.
